This is the final sketch for a recent watercolor painting of mine called 'Home on the Range'. The idea came to me as I was re-reading Desert Solitaire by Ed Abbey. The location is no place in particular and the finished painting depicts a rather idealized vision of the high desert at twilight.
I like to think about old Cactus Ed as being out there somewhere still, maybe contemplating the aesthetics of last light on the red rocks as he plots the overthrow of the tourism-industrial complex. I wonder if he'd like the flamingo?
